SnackDown: Finding Dory Cereal

Welcome to another edition of Snackdown, where we look at new snacks and cereals and see if they're worth a shot. On this edition we go somewhere beyond the sea and check out the recently released Finding Dory Fruity Swirls cereal. Based of course on the record breaking sequel to Finding Nemo. I loved the original movie, but have yet to get around to checking the new film out in theaters. Then again, I'm not a massive fan of going to the movies, so this may be a wait until DVD for me.

That aside, much like most big summer movies for kids, there is a ton of tie-ins. And since Finding Dory was incredibly anticipated, there is practically everything you can imagine. I even found Goldfish crackers with blue dory shapes. But the most enticing for me to try is the Finding Dory cereal. General Mills has been pumping out a lot of limited cereals lately based on Batman V Superman, Minions, Star Wars, the 2012 Ninja Turtles cartoon and most recently Finding Dory. The box is very nice and blue featuring Dory, Nemo and Hank the Octopus. To hell with Marlin I suppose. Along with some cereal pieces that look a lot like trix pieces in just orange and purple.

And lo and behold inside, that looks to be the case. It looks like they just had some excess of Trix cereal bits and just slapped them in a new package, slapping Dory on the cover. Honestly, that feels a little lazy. The Minions put pictures on their bits. Batman and Superman had shapes similar to their emblems. Star wars had marshmallows based on characters and Ninja Turtles had giant pieces that looked like turtle heads. This definitely feels like a lazier take. But how does the cereal itself fare?

After tasting it, this is indeed just Trix with Dory on the cover. That being said, it is still very sweet and tasty. So if you like Trix already, you'll probably enjoy this as well. My only gripe is that it could have tried to feel more like the Finding Nemo franchise. Easiest way would be to have the shapes look more like fish. It just feels like a tie-in with little really tied to it. But if you do find the cereal, it's at least worth a taste. Or just grab a box of Trix instead. You'll get the same result.
