Rapidly Reviewing Sonic SatAM Episode 6: Super Sonic

It's yet another Sonic episode where the title is super vague. Which is I guess fitting with a title like "Super Sonic".  We open the episode at the Knothole water wheel as we see a rather deflated Bunnie giving some parts to Rotor. Sally also went and found a massive wrench.  And yeah, that is a big ass wrench. However, the issue goes beyond wrenches as Nicole is on the fritz, showing chili dogs instead of water wheels.

Turns out that her sub-micro processor chip has a fatal error, which becomes our excuse to enter Robotropolis for today's episode. Sonic distracts the walker bots as Sally makes her way into one of the factories. She finds the goods, but gets caught by one of the worker bots. Sonic continues being chased by the bots,  as Sally finds her way into the "forbidden zone".

Inside this forbidden zone, She runs into a mysterious cloaked figure who destroys a swat bot with a single eye beam and walks off, much to the annoyance of Robotnik, who has been watching the whole thing go down. Sally meets back up with Sonic and the two return to Knothole. According to Sally, this was "the guardian" a figure who watches over the resting place of "Lazar", a wizard that could perform magic spells via his computer.  And Lazar will only be awakened by someone super evil enough to do so, like a certain robot making fat man.

Sonic feels that he can handle things in the forbidden zone, despite Sally's fears that he will wake Lazar. Sonic of course believes he's way too fast to cause any problems, to which Sally tries to warn him that one day speed won't be the answer to his problems. But he zooms off, ever arrogant as always. Sadly this wasn't as much Sarcasm tennis as we're used to from these two.

Meanwhile, Robotnik and Snively find the guardian. Despite the guardian's lack of a need for money, Robotnik tells him that all he wants to do is honor the grand wizard (that sounds a lot worse when you think about it for a moment). Robotnik is allowed passage into the forbidden zone and given directions to Lazar's resting place, which is filled with enough booby traps to anyone who isn't as evil as Robotnik. It's like the cave of wonders in Aladdin if instead of a pure heart, it's no heart at all.

Sonic zooms to the resting place and zooms into the resting place, avoiding the traps. There are three paths to choose, though the results would end up with drilled hedgehog, fried hedgehog or sliced and diced hedgehog. But the bigger  issue in his way is the guardian who starts blasting at Sonic with his eye lasers. He manages to make his own exit.

Robotnik finds Lazar's chamber and steals the spell computer, which just looks like a giant hunk of rock. Sonic continues to platform jump his way past some more obstacles while Sally continues to worry back at Knothole. Back at Robotropolis, Robotnik activates the spell computer.

Still lost in the forbidden zone, Sonic runs into an awakened Lazar who is none too happy about his computer being taken. He blames Sonic and traps him in an orb. Robotnik finds a teleport spell, that manages to bring Sally and Bunnie to him. The two are easily captured by Robotnik's goons. He activates a submission spell on both of them that puts them in complete control. Thankfully it's less creepy sounding than it actually is.

Lazar finally realizes that someone else is using the magic. It turns out that Lazar isn't as evil as he once was as a good few centuries of sleep has given him time to realize that he was kind of a dick. He agrees to free Sonic so that he can put a stop to Robotnik as long as the computer is returned.  However, Lazar isn't that naive and removes Sonic's speed to ensure he keeps his word.  So in other words that whole speech from Sally earlier finally comes into play.

Sonic makes it back to Robotropolis, even managing to use his brains for once by using explosives to get rid of some swat bots. However, he is quickly teleported to Robotnik's lair and held down by Bunnie and Sally. They drag him to the roboticizer, but Sonic escapes and grabs the computer. He uses it to break the mind control as the three manage their escape. He gives back to Lazar, to which Sally brings up a good point about why not just destroy the computer. But it would release too much evil, so he'll just guard it from now on. He gives Sonic back his speed as the fortress vanishes.

They're brought back to Knothole just as Rotor finally manages to finish his big thing with the water wheel... which is making it light up. Okay then.

This was a pretty good episode overall. I like the whole idea of magic in the world of Mobius still being tied heavily to technology with Lazar and the spell computer. It's those things that really makes the world of SatAm so interesting, even if it doesn't always feel as well thought out in the story. I also like the concept of having Sonic need to use his wits besides just relying on his speed, even if it doesn't feel like the episode gets enough time to do much with the idea.

That is the biggest flaw with this episode, which is the pacing. From the first mission to get the chip for Nicole, we rush head first into the stuff with the guardian and Lazar and then rush even more to get to a the end of this episode. Honestly, there is enough strength in the concept to "Super Sonic" that would have made for a great two parter. Building the stuff with getting to the computer first, then dealing with the second part with Sonic being without his speed. Still, for what was done, this was as I said a pretty good episode overall.

Oh, and obviously, maybe they should have used the computer to free Cat.

Yeah, I still remember.
